Adolescence
Adolescence is a time of change between childhood and adulthood. Significant changes occur in a young person’s body, thinking and relationships.
During adolescence, emotional health and relationships with family and friends take on a new importance. Concerns about sexuality, body image, mental health and risk taking may occur at this time.
Changes in the way young people are able to think lead them to grapple with new ideas, thoughts and opinions. At times this can be very confusing, both for young people and for those around them.
Young people have specific health problems, needs and concerns which are different from the needs of adults or children. In view of these differences, helping professionals need to be responsive to the specific needs of young people.
